Level 3 Chimney Inspection in Indianapolis
A Level 3 chimney inspection is the most thorough and in-depth evaluation of your chimney, reserved for situations where a serious hidden hazard is suspected and the only way to confirm it is to access the concealed parts of the structure. It is the least common inspection we perform, because it is only warranted when a real, potentially serious problem cannot be evaluated any other way. When it is needed, it is the inspection that protects your home from a hazard that would otherwise stay hidden.

What a Level 3 Inspection Can Uncover
A Level 3 inspection includes everything in a Level 1 and Level 2 and adds access to concealed areas that cannot be evaluated any other way. Because it reaches where no other inspection can, it is what finally confirms and locates the most serious hidden problems. Here is what it can find.
Hidden flue cracks or breaches
Deterioration behind a wall or chase
Post chimney fire structural damage
Concealed water damage
Damaged concealed structural elements

When a Level 3 inspection is needed
A Level 3 inspection is called for when a serious hazard is suspected in a part of the chimney that cannot be seen during a Level 1 or Level 2. In practice it usually follows a lower-level inspection that raised a red flag: a camera scan suggesting damage in a concealed section, evidence of a hidden structural problem, or signs of deterioration behind a wall or chase. It can also be warranted after a significant event, such as a serious chimney fire or storm damage, where the concealed portions of the chimney may have been affected.
Our honest approach to Level 3 inspections
Because a Level 3 is invasive and involves opening up part of the chimney or the home, we do not recommend one lightly. In most cases a thorough Level 2 with a camera scan answers the question and locates the problem without any demolition. We turn to a Level 3 only when the concealed area genuinely cannot be evaluated another way and there is real reason to believe a serious hazard is hidden there. When we do recommend one, we explain exactly what we suspect, why the access is necessary, and what the process involves. We inspect to serve, not to sell.
Our Level 3 inspection process
A Level 3 inspection is carefully planned. We begin with the findings that prompted it, then determine the least invasive way to access the concealed area in question. We open or remove only what is necessary to reach and evaluate the suspected hazard, document everything with photos, and, depending on what we find, restore the opened area and lay out the repair the situation calls for. Because our technicians hold full chimney system credentials, the same team that performs the inspection can carry out the repair correctly.
